Local Cuisines: Australia

First things first: Australia does not have heaps of dishes that I can call their 'own' because I actually don’t know any. I don’t know any food like Sinigangor Nilagaor Adobo. You know, those types of foods that you can actually have for breakkie, lunch, or dinner. In short, ulam. Of course, steak is very much popular here in the land of Kangaroos because the meat here is kick arse great!!! However, steak is not actually Australian, right? It’s something else; it just really tastes good when made with Aussie beef. I only know snacks and those salads. I think Australians love sweet things. Of course they do! All those lollies and liquorice? Chocolates? Is it not a dead giveaway?!? And I swear, Australian snacks/sweets are really good. They can make you salivate! Anyway, here are some of the best treats that originated from the Land Down Under!

ANZAC BISCUITS

Anzac biscuits
(or bikkies) are chewy biscuits that use rolled oats and desiccated coconuts as their main ingredients. They are sweet and have this coconut-y flavour to them which tastes really good and are suitable for morning and afternoon teas. Anzac biscuits are associated with Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, hence the name Anzac biscuits. They were originally made by the soldiers’ wives to have something to send to the soldiers abroad whilst battling the World War I, imagine that?!? They love their husbands so much! The wives actually made a deep thought about the ingredients because the ingredients needed to make these yummy biscuits do not spoil after a short period of time when you compare them to the usual ingredients you use to make normal biscuits. These babies are like small serves of oatmeal. With some coconut and a piece of heaven added.

LAMINGTON
Now these things! These little devils are really good, even better than the Anzac biscuits. If you like cakes, that is. Lamingtons are sponge cakes coated with chocolate icing and desiccated coconuts. Do you reckon that Australians like coconuts too much? These little cakes are often served with jam or with cream sandwiched in between. They are often found in cafes and bakeries; almost everywhere, actually. You’ll never miss out on these cakes! It is rumoured that Lamingtons are named after Lord Lamington. A government figure of Queensland in the late 1800s. A fact about these devils? They are called coconut bars in Ohio, USA.

POTATO BAKE
Okay, enough with the snacks and sweet things! You might blame me if you get some type of diabetes! I’ll introduce you to this very creamy, filling, and of course, yummy—potato bake. Some people (like me) call it Potato casserole but it doesn’t actually matter, they are both yummy. Potato bake is not actually Australian but this dish is something that is usually seen in barbecues or typical Aussie gatherings. What makes the dish so good and irresistible? The layers of potatoes, of course! This dish is made by putting layers of milk and cream, bacon, cheese, and thinly sliced potatoes on top of each other until you have that desired height then you pop them in the oven and viola! The only thing remaining for you to do is to set the table up and go to the toilet because I swear you need an empty stomach to eat this dish! So not good if you’re a weight watcher.

Australia is not a country like the Philippines which have heaps of original or native cuisines, however, it it a country that accepts all kinds of food. The people here are used to eating indian, english, american, asian, and other of cuisines. They are not picky and are not afraid to try new things. Australia may not be a country with original yummy food but it is a country with people who likes food and are not afraid to introduce their tastebuds to something new.
